It was early October in a rural area of Pennsylvania and Momma cat had decided that it was time to move her 4 week old kittens to a warmer place. There were 8 kittens total, so she had to move them one by one. She found a hole in the wall and outside there was a truck with a big box with hay. She would pick up each kitten and walk them to the truck and head back to get another kitten. When she got to the truck with the 6th kitten, she heard someone outside and crouched down peeking out the top of the box. She saw a strange woman placing empty boxes in front of the hole in the side of the building. And at the same time, she heard a roar and the truck started to move. Two of her kittens were still in the building, what would happen to them?
The two kittens had been sleeping and woke up in the quiet basement. The older and bigger of the two kittens got up and slowly walked around the room searching for his mommy and siblings. Where was mommy and his siblings? He walked around a little more and went back to his little brother. They both laid there for a while, waiting on mommy to come back.
Upstairs, Lisa, in her orange apron, was preparing the coffee shop for the day. She was brewing fresh coffee and preparing dough and batter for her favorite Pumpkin Bread and Pumpkin Muffins. Her favorite holiday was coming fast, Halloween and today was the day to decorate the shop in preparation for the holiday. The sounds of Halloween She had already put on the Halloween specials, looping them on the small TV in the children’s corner. She hummed around the shop as she baked the muffins and decorated the shop. The whole place smelled of fresh coffee and pumpkin.
The smells from upstairs were filling the room where the kittens were laying quietly and it was making the kittens very hungry. They could hear sounds coming from the floor above them and it was a welcoming sound. The older of the two kittens got up from the blanket and headed towards the stairs. His little brother put his paw out on his brother’s tail to stop him, but the older kitten kept going. The older brother braved the tall steps and made his way up to the main coffee shop where he could hear Lisa singing. He followed her voice, it sounded friendly and sweet.
Lisa was kneading Pumpkin bread, when she was pleasantly startled by the presence of a kitten’s cute face. He was small and looked frightened. She brushed off most of the flour and spices and reached for him. He so wanted to jump into her arms but had to lead her to his little brother. He turned and ran towards the steps leading down to the cellar. He looked back to make sure Lisa was following.
“What is it sweetie?”
Lisa followed the kitten down the stairs, she turned on the light as she went down. At the bottom of the steps to the basement and a little towards the right she spotted the kitten again. He was sitting by another smaller kitten.
“Where’s your mommy?” she asked as she looked around. She heard and saw nothing. “You are both so adorable.”
With pumpkin spiced covered hands, Lisa reached down and picked up the two kittens. She carried them upstairs to the main shop. She placed them on the couch near the children’s corner. She walked over to the counter and grabbed the milk and a couple of coffee saucers. She placed them on the floor and filled them with milk. The two kittens hopped down and quickly drank up all the milk. They walked over to Lisa and purred as they rubbed against her legs.
Lisa glanced down and smiled. She noticed that the larger kitten was a dark tan and the smaller kitten was an off white. She pointed to the larger kitten, “Your name will be Koffee” and she then pointed at the smaller kitten and said “and your name will be Kreme.”
“No. No hiding under the couch. If both of you are going to stay here, you need to help out at the coffee shop. Our customers are very kind and caring. Come out and greet them, they will all love you.”
Koffee and Kreme came out of hiding while Lisa was unlocking the door. A lady and her two children entered. The children ran over to the corner and started watching the Halloween specials. Their mother sat down on the couch, pulled out a ball of some kind and two sticks. She moved the sticks with the ball and was making something. Lisa saw the kittens watching. As she brought over the coffee to the lady, she explained to the kittens that the lady, named Shannon, was knitting. She further explained that there would be others joining Shannon, and they met every morning to knit together and chat over coffee.
Kreme jumped up on the couch and sat beside Shannon, he was purring. Shannon leaned down and petted the kitten. Others arrived and sat down and joined in drinking coffee, eating Pumpkin muffins and knitting.
“They are the perfect addition to the shop Lisa.” Shannon said. “Let’s see, what shall we knit today? I guess we could knit a couple of little beds. How’s that sound ladies?” The ladies nodded and started making Koffee and Kreme a couple of small beds.
This was the start of Koffee and Kreme’s journey at the coffee shop with their new mommy, Lisa. They would grow up, be mischievous and learn the many things that happened in the coffee shop. They would never forget their first day and watching Lisa run around decorating and baking for Halloween. Lisa’s infectious enthusiasm would stick with the boys. Like children waiting for Christmas, the KaK brothers wait for Halloween.
My name is Kreme. My brother’s name is Koffee. Some call us Kat and Kitten. How we found Lisa is a long story and through this blog, I hope to let everyone know how we all met and our journeys we have/will have together.
The history of Kat and Kitten. How did they meet Lisa? Where do they live? Why do the love Halloween so much? Where did they meet Hirschie?
